House Members Introduce Bipartisan School Safety Bill

Representatives Holloway, Glazier, Faircloth, and Lucas have introduced the 2013 School Safety Act.  This bill supports funding for additional mental health counselors and school resource officers, as well as stregthens school improvement teams and school crisis plans  The bill also requires that guidance counselors spend 80% of their time providing direct services to students.  NCPTA Executive Director Debra Horton attended the press conference in support of this important bill.  The text of HB 452 can be viewed here.

Families and Educators in Ahoskie Participate in Team Up for Healthy Learning

The North Carolina PTA and NC Action for Healthy Kids co-hosted a third Team Up for Healthy Learning event on March 14. Ahoskie Elementary hosted families and educators for an evening focused on improving school wellness environments. NCPTA High Fives Schools in Wake County That Offer SAFEchild Program

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and NCPTA wants to make sure PTA members and families know about the resources provided by SAFEchild. A big high five goes to all Wake County parents and educators who have helped SAFEchild provide the Funny Tummy Feelings program in schools. SAFEchild empowers more than 6,500 students every year with this interactive program that teaches children skills to protect themselves from physical and sexual abuse. Funny Tummy Feelings also informs children how to make appropriate decisions in a variety of situations. Laura Bay, secretary-treasurer of National PTA, will address hundreds of parents and educators in North Carolina at the NCPTA Parent Education and Leadership Conference, which will be held May 31 – June 1, 2013, in Raleigh. Action for Healthy Kids Offers School Grants

School Grants for Healthy Kids are available for the 2013-2014 school year. Action for Healthy Kids has officially opened applications for grants to create or expand school breakfast programs. PTAs, individual schools, or districts may apply for these funds. PTAs that wish to apply for the grants must work cooperatively with the principals and child nutrition managers in their schools to oversee the grant process.
