The Hiwassee Dam PTA kicked of a month of reading by providing reading logs for parents and students to record their reading time at home. Families are logging time the student spends reading as well as time the parents read to their children from September through October 10. The media specialist organized the school’s largest Scholastic Book Fair, and many teachers selected a special book to read to their students along with special event days and some field trips to highlight the books they are reading.

The PTA also sponsored a parent workshop night to teach parents how to “Read for Success” with their child along with other workshops, including “Overcoming Homework Struggles and “Using Study Island at Home.” They’ve had great attendance, and more are in the plans for November.

“This month has been a harmonious effort between PTA parents, volunteers, staff and students,” said Tammy Fleischer, president of the Hiwassee Dam Elementary and Middle School PTA. “It is amazing what we can accomplish when we all pull together.”

The fun with reading won’t stop in September for this PTA. They plan to keep the momentum going with their sights set on another big round of activities in March in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

NCPTA plans to check back in with the Hiwassee Dam PTA in October to learn about the total hours of reading time logged by the students and families. We may even stop in for a personal high five!
