Education Improvement Act of 2013 Passes House

House Bill 719, Education Improvement Act of 2013, passed the North Carolina House of Representatives.  The bill text can be found here.  This bill allows for removal of teachers for bad performance, increases the number of professional development credit requirements, and calls for a study on how to reward good teachers with merit pay.  The bill will now be considered by the Senate, which has its own education reform plan.

Bill that Provides Tuition for Private Schools Introduced in the House

House members filed HB 944 Opportunity Scholarship Act on Monday.  This bill would give students who transfer from public to private schools up to $4,200 a year to pay tuition. House Bill 944 would set aside $40 million in the budget year beginning July 1, and $50 million the following year to award the scholarships. The lead sponsor of the bill is Rep. Rob Bryan, R-Mecklenburg.  The bill provides that families at 300 percent of the federal poverty level or below would be eligible. Currently, 300 percent of the federal poverty level is $70,650 for a family of four.

PTA members from North Carolina traveled to Washington D.C. in March for the PTA Legislative Conference.
