Cullowhee Valley PTA Engages Community to Help Build Playground

Over 50 volunteers from the community, Western Carolina University, and Cullowhee Valley School came out to help build a new playground for the elementary school on August 15-16. The new playground equipment was partially funded by a $5,000 “Healthy Active Communities” grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation.

“Earlier this year, Donald Dunn and Debra Horton from NCPTA visited us in Jackson County and excited us about what grants can do for PTAs,” said Cullowhee Valley PTA President, Todd Vinyard, “One of our parents, Sloan Despeaux, a professor at Western Carolina University, wrote grant applications, and along with the school we were able to get a new playground to replace 20 year old equipment.”
