Take Your Family to School Week was a big success in North Carolina thanks to the hard work of PTA volunteers across the state. Myrtle Grove Middle School PTSA was one of 11 PTAs in the state to receive a National PTA grant to support family activities with an emphasis on safety at home and at play.
A big High Five goes out to the PTA members who worked to secure funding, set healthy goals and implement activities with a focus on fun! The Myrtle Grove Middle School PTSA was also awarded a Just ASK! grant from NCPTA earlier in the year, and they have had good parent participation at state events.
Families Skate to Success
PTSA members planned a series of opportunities for families throughout the week, including Skate Night which brought out 265 people for a combined health and family wellness event along with parent learning opportunities. Topics included Common Core Standards and EOG study hints to help students. The event gave parents a chance to interact with teachers and earn raffle tickets as they learned about new equipment and facilities at school. Grant funding has been instrumental in helping the school community create a sand volleyball court and purchase new recess balls and frisbee golf sets.
Myrtle Grove PTSA and WHAT (Wilmington Health Access for Teens) also attended Skate Night to assist with family involvement. Each child received take-home bag with pencils, paper, highlighters, flash drives, and other material for student learning, and one lucky winner received an iPad.
“This PTSA has been very proactive about taking advantage of opportunities to learn at NCPTA events, and our staff has been able to work with them on national grant opportunities and leadership trainings for successful projects,” said Debra Horton, executive director of NCPTA. “We applaud them for their passion to build a strong team of members who want to help provide a healthy environment for learning.”
