N.C. Department of Cultural Resources Provides Ideas for Family Summer Activities

A message from Susan Kluttz, Secretary of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources:

At the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources we have a strong educational mission and try to stress the importance of the arts and history in education in all that we do. I was honored to be asked to share a message with you and tell you about two exciting initiatives our department is providing this summer.

First, a wealth of family-friendly, free events will be offered all across the state on July 13 and August 10 as part of our 2nd Saturdays promotion. Civil War drills and demonstrations, pirate tales and arts and crafts fairs are just a sampling of the fun visitors will find.

Many of the programs will focus on North Carolina history, and each venue will offer a unique program that may include arts, local crafts, history, music, food and hands-on activities. Programs will be offered at all of Cultural Resources’ 27 historic sites, seven history museums, two art museums and other attractions. More information and a complete list of programs.

Also this summer, Cultural Resources has launched a new educational database that allows you and your child to search thousands of lesson and research guides, online activities and exhibits, field trip planners, articles and multimedia all in one place. This tool includes resources produced by our historic sites, history and art museums, symphony, arts council, State Archives, State Library and more. Explore online.

Thank you for choosing to take an active role in making our state’s schools the very best they can be. I appreciate all the hard work you do.

Susan Kluttz
