Anyone aged 12 and older may now be vaccinated in North Carolina. The vaccine is free everywhere in North Carolina.

The best way to fight COVID-19, slow the spread of the virus and save lives is to get vaccinated and encourage others to get vaccinated. You can visit YourSpotYourShot.nc.gov for information on health departments and hospitals giving vaccinations in your area.

Dear Membership, Supporters, and Partners,
It has been nearly a year since the Pandemic Journey began. Our breath was sucked out of us when we thought we would have to quarantine for several weeks. A year later and still not knowing an end date, we cannot deny we are tired.
We want to make clear our position concerning Covid 19 and schools reopening. NCPTA supports NPTA’s position of state and local control working with parents, school administrators, teachers, businesses, to make the best decision for our children. PTAs across the country are working hard advocating for our children.

We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up … discovering we have the strength to stare it down.

Last August we were excited to start the best PTA year, whether it was greeting new teachers and parents at the local unit or planning how we can serve families and communities on a state level. Our president, Harold Dixon, spoke of the importance of being heroes for all of our children, red cape and all! The state organization began speaking loudly to everyone that PTA is about the entire life of the child – school, family, church, and community. Everywhere, we are to be every child’s hero.
Today, PTA is emerging beyond the walls of our schools and claiming its place in the child’s entire world. Today, our role as heroes, of “just a step at a time,” looks different than it did two weeks ago. We do not get to turn around, rather we must recognize that we have the ability and the “strength to stare down” the chaos that lies ahead of us.
The women that started PTA were courageous women. Alice Birney and Phoebe Hearst, in a time where women were “seen and unheard” and without the right to vote, fought for the rights of children. The courage of Selena Butler, an African American woman, is undaunting, fighting for children in Jim Crow South. In a time of great persecution, Butler’s courage changed the lives for all families and children.
Now it’s our turn! Reach out to your schools and your mayors asking what PTA can do to help with the efforts. It may be to send out information to your email lists or post on your social media with valuable information about food, internet support, or new educational websites. It might be posting a link providing support for parents struggling with a job loss. Send a “cyber” smile to your community, be creative and find ways to share fellowship with each other.
Advocacy is the heart of our PTA’s history though many of us have forgotten it. Today, Advocacy retakes its place in our organization. Advocacy by calling a parent who is stressed about their child’s learning, Advocacy by letting leaders know that some children are not able to receive his/her lunches, or Advocacy by calling/emailing/texting Washington or Raleigh about legislation that will impact the course of this crisis. We are One Voice for All Children, we are the heroes because we will take “one step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up…discovering we have the strength to stare it down.” WE ARE HEROES!
