Thursday, July 29:
Features a double header with our NCPTA Governance Retreat in the morning and our NCPTA Mini-Institute in the afternoon entitled “Engaging Students of Color…Relationships, Rapport, and Respect Matter”.
Both sessions are open to NCPTA Board of Directors, PTA Council and Local Unit Leaders, PTA Local Unit Members, Educators (Teachers, District Leaders, School Administrators), Parents/Guardians, Community Organizations, Advocates, and Anyone Doing the Heart-Work Related to Impacting the Lives of Students.
Governance Retreat: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
The NCPTA Governance Retreat will kick off our work of preparing ourselves to think about our goals and plans for next school year. Part of the time will include assessing the impact of our governance work this past year so we can make adjustments that will keep us moving in the right direction. We will have in-depth discussions about the work of PTA committees, importance of developing partnerships within the community and schools, and how to develop and cultivate innovative programming. Come hear updates from NCPTA Committees about this year’s work, its impact on general PTA membership, challenges experienced, and proposed changes for the upcoming year. Engage in dialogue and brainstorming related to moving the work of committees beyond meetings and events.

NCPTA Mini-Institute- “Engaging Students of Color…Relationships, Rapport, and Respect Matter”: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Students in North Carolina come from a large and increasing number of racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse families. Addressing the unique needs of students from diverse backgrounds is one of the major challenges facing public education today because those serving our students are often inadequately prepared with the relevant content knowledge, experience, and training. Educators and advocates must have a thorough understanding of the specific cultures of the students they serve and support and acknowledge how they can change interactions to embrace the differences. During our NCPTA Mini-Institute entitled “Engaging Students of Color…Relationships, Rapport, and Respect Matter”, participants will explore the power relationships, rapport, and respect have on engaging students of color.
NCPTA Mini-Institute Sessions Include:
- It’s More than Handshakes and High Fives: Building Authentic Relationships with Students Post-Pandemic
- Presented by Jermaine Porter, Equity Leadership and Strategy Coordinator for Equity Affairs
- Strengthening Our School Community: Relationships, Respect, and Resiliency
- Presented by Morgan Hunt, Assistant Principal
- E3-Engaging, Empowering, and Effective Family Advocacy
- Presented by Greg Jones, Title I Family Engagement Coordinator

Now, more than ever, engaging fathers and other male role models in education is of critical importance. Students who have fathers or male father figures involved in their education are more likely to get better grades; have better verbal and problem-solving skills; do better on achievement tests; demonstrate a higher tolerance for stress and frustration; are more likely to have positive peer relationships; are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities; and, have fewer discipline problems. It is essential that those advocating for and working with children find innovative and relevant ways to engage fathers and other positive male role models into the education of children.
Male Engagement: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
A four-hour deep dive into the significance of engaging males in the educational experiences of our children. Our time together will include powerful conversations, discussions, and activities led by Dr. Leroy Wray, NCPTA Male Engagement Chair. Here’s what you have to look forward to…
