Reflections on NCPTA’s Advocacy Day at the North Carolina General Assembly

PTA leaders joined Executive Director Debra Horton and lobbyist Ashley Perkinson for an advocacy day at the North Carolina General Assembly.  These leaders had the opportunity to discuss important education policy issues such as teacher compensation, funding for teacher assistants, and proposed changes to Read to Achieve.

Gary Lewis, Wake County PTA Council President said:  “It was a pleasure to work with the NCPTA to Advocate on behalf of our students and teachers on June 11th.  It is very important that our State and County representatives are reminded that the PTA was formed to Advocate on behalf of our children and not as a fundraising unit for our local schools.  This will happen only when our PTA leaders are seen and heard.  It was great to have the opportunity today to be seen and to be heard by some of our Wake County Representatives and Senators.”

Jennifer Scarrow, a PTA member from Highland Creek PTA, said:  “Today was the first day of our summer, and I had to leave the house at 5:30 a.m. to get to Raleigh at 8:30 a.m.  Totally worth it!   Being there to support teachers’ pay increase was the least I could do!   I really enjoyed talking to everyone and thanking them for supporting our teachers!  I met with Senator Tarte.  I stopped by the Speaker of the House’s office.  I also ran into Eric Guckian, Governor McCrory’s Senior Advisor on Education.  Thank you so much for setting this up!  Today surpassed all my expectations, it was better than I could have imagined!  THANK YOU!!   I look forward to coming back to Raleigh again to show support for our Educators!”
