A Letter to the Editor We, the people… Raleigh, NC, (January 15, 2021) — As president of NCPTA, I reach out to our members and our state with sadness for our country, yet with much hope for this experiment of a democracy to grow into its greatness. It has been 10 months since our nation was first diagnosed with Covid-19, 5 months since the suffocation of George Floyd, 2 months since the election of a new president, and 1 week since the darkest day in American history. Together, we watched as our capital was overrun by other American citizens. America

NCPTA President’s Statement on George Floyd

“Our Children Are Listening” Raleigh, NC (June 4, 2020): In NCPTA, we advocate for all parents and children. For over 100 years we have stood up and proclaimed that all children have a right to reach his/her dreams. The twelve great religions of our world teach us that we are our brother’s keeper.  Many of us are not aware that we share the same Golden Rule.  Christians say, “Do to others as you would want them to do to you.” “Treat not others in the ways that you yourself would find hurtful” is a quote from the Buddha. In the

Using Your Voice to Help Provide Access for All

Amy Kobos – Health and Wellness Promoter, Fayetteville Did you know that 1 in 4 children in North Carolina are at risk for hunger, and that nearly 30% of children under the age of 18 live in poverty? We can easily assume people come from the same place as us, and we even get wrapped up in our own bubble thinking everyone has similar advantages, but in reality we know this isn’t true. Many American children and families struggle. Don’t assume every student has the privilege to have college freely financed or have parents who can help with homework. Many

Celebrating Cultural Diversity

Amy Kobos – Health and Wellness Promoter, Fayetteville Music is a universal language, and at the same time, unique to every group of people. You could be Haitian, Alaskan, African-American, Japanese, Eastern-European, or Middle-Eastern creating the music—or appreciating the music. Music is one way we can effectively communicate who we are as an individual or as a culture. It takes dedicated work and practice to connect and celebrate our diversity, and it is inevitable there will always be differences that challenge unity. An inclusive PTA that values diversity contributes to a healthy school climate for children. But how can we

North Carolina PTA Advocates for Higher Teacher Salaries

North Carolina PTA believes ensuring that North Carolina students are receiving a high quality education is impossible without simultaneously attracting some of the state’s best and brightest individuals to enter the teaching profession, stay in the classroom, and influence the learning experience in a positive way. Teacher salaries have been frozen in North Carolina since 2008 except for a 1.2 percent across-the-board increase in 2012. On March 31, NCPTA Executive Director Debra Horton and Public School Forum of NC Executive Director Keith Poston presented on behalf of a K-12 Education Consortium of parents, teachers, and school administrators to the NC
