Scholarship Grants for Children with Disabilities Bill Becomes Law

Governor McCrory recently signed House Bill 269 Children with Disabilities Scholarship Grants into law.  This law creates a new scholarship for children with special needs.  Those selected will receive tuition up to $3,000 per semester for reimbursement of private school tuition and special education and related services, including services provided to home schooled students.  Students must meet the following eligibility requirements in order to apply: a. Requires an Individualized Education Plan; b.  Receives special education or related services on a daily basis; c. Has not been placed in a nonpublic school or facility by a public agency at public expense;

NFL, National PTA Join Forces on Youth Health and Fitness

The NFL and National PTA will launch a nationwide partnership on youth health and fitness this fall. The “Back to Sports” initiative will help PTA leaders across the country educate their communities on youth wellness—from concussion education to NFL PLAY 60 tips on nutrition and staying active. Local PTAs will plan “Back to Sports Nights,” engaging parents and community leaders on ways to help their kids stay safer and healthier as they head back to the sports field this fall. Just ASK! Healthy Schools Grants Available for PTAs in NC

PTAs play an important role in engaging parents, teachers, and children to live healthier lives. NCPTA is offering Just ASK! Healthy Schools Grants for eligible PTAs in North Carolina. Eight grants are available for up to $1000 for 2013-2014. The grant funds must be used for a health project or program that will be completed by June 2014. PTAs are encouraged to apply for funding to support healthy school environment projects. Apply online by September 20, 2013.

2013 General Assembly Long Session Adjourns

NC Budget Education Highlights

The North Carolina General Assembly has released its proposed $20.6 billion budget agreement by the Senate and House of Representatives.  Here are some highlights from the K-12 education budget: Provides funding for additional school resource officers and funding for installation and maintenance of panic alarms ($9 million in recurring funds) Reduces funding for teacher assistants by 21% (reduction of $120 million in 2013-2014 and $110 million in 2014-2015) Provides funding for a new private school voucher program for families that meet the income requirements ($10 million) Provides funding to support the North Carolina Excellent Public Schools Act, an initiative that
