NCPTA Advocates Attend Governor’s Press Conference on Teacher Compensation

North Carolina PTA leaders attended a press conference about teacher compensation at the Governor’s Mansion on June 25. Governor McCrory, Speaker Tillis, school administrators, teachers and education advocates gathered for an announcement that included a proposal to raise teacher compensation, not cut additional teacher assistants and provide funding for textbooks. Two North Carolina PTA Councils Win $10,000 Grants

Cumberland County PTA Council and Wake County PTA Council were both selected by National PTA to receive the Smart from the Start: Community Outreach grant for $10,000. Smart from the Start: Community Outreach provides PTA regions, districts and councils with tools and resources to educate families of children ages 3-5 and partner with a local neighborhood community to improve awareness of energy balance concepts. Energy balance is finding a balance between the calories we consume through what we eat and drink and the calories we burn through physical activity. Learn more.

NCPTA Advocacy Positions on Proposed Senate Budget

The State Senate voted to pass its proposed budget on May 31.  Attention now turns to the House of Representatives as its leaders develop its proposed State budget.  Here are some of the budget advocacy items that NCPTA is working on: 1.  NCPTA strongly advocates for increased teacher compensation to ensure that North Carolina teacher compensation is regionally competitive and that North Carolina attracts the best and brightest students to enter and stay in the teaching profession.  North Carolina ranks 47th in the United States in teacher compensation.  We can do better for our teachers and our children. 2.  NCPTA

Governor McCrory Announces New Teacher Compensation Proposal

Governor McCrory today announced a new teacher compensation plan that includes raises for new teachers, as announced in February,  but also provides at least a 2% raise for veteran teachers.  The plan also calls for the creation of a Career Pathways for Teachers program that will enable teachers to earn more money through leadership roles, teaching certain core subjects, and teaching at high-need schools.  This proposal will be included in the Governor’s budget that will be considered by the General Assembly when it convenes for its short session beginning in May.  The full announcement can be viewed via WRAL’s website:

General Assembly Short Session Convenes this Month

On May 14, the North Carolina General Assembly will convene its 2014 short session. One of the top priorities for North Carolina PTA this short session is to advocate for a meaningful increase in teacher compensation. NCPTA believes ensuring that North Carolina students are receiving a high quality education is impossible without simultaneously attracting some of the State’s best and brightest individuals to enter the teaching profession, stay in the classroom, and influence the learning experience in a positive way. Teacher salaries have been frozen in North Carolina since 2008 except for a 1.2 percent across-the-board increase in 2012. NCPTA

Food Desert Zone Recommendations Include PTAs

The General Assembly’s House Legislative Research Committee on Food Desert Zones adopted its findings and recommendations yesterday.  Parent Teacher Associations were included in both the findings and recommendations.  The Committee’s findings on school gardens and school breakfasts are as follows: Finding on School Gardens School gardens are an important tool for helping students be involved and connected with healthy foods.
